Why Music?
Music is an integral part of every person’s life. It stimulates our creative intellect and opens us to self-expression. Experiences with music can be integrated into almost every aspect of life because music is born out of life’s events. Music is a creative and therapeutic way of expressing and sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences, and I believe no person should be without the opportunity to make and appreciate music.
Music teaches teamwork and the importance of personal contribution, and can easily be integrated into any other subject to enhance the learning experience. Music may be used to express emotions that students would feel uncomfortable talking about. It opens students up to the idea that their thoughts and feelings can be appreciated and accepted by others. It boosts confidence and prepares students for communicating in the world outside of school. When students play with a band or sings with a choir, they soon learn that every individual part is important. This places a certain amount of responsibility on the student, but also a sense of pride to know that they are contributing to the group. Teamwork is a balance between leading and following that is a major part of music performance.
Who?
To be a great music educator it requires more than being a good musician; it takes creativity, clarity, insight, and expression. Teachers must create a good rapport with students by being positive role models. They must encourage students to do their best through listening to both their performances and their thoughts; and by finding creative ways to help them succeed. Classroom management is essential for creating a positive learning environment. Teachers must gain the respect of students before they can be totally successful. Showing respect to students gives them the responsibility to act appropriately.
What?
My goal is to have students leave my classes with an appreciation for music and the arts and to give them the opportunity to have fun and express themselves simultaneously. I want to pass on my passion for music to another generation. They will learn that they are a valued part of a team, that they must work together to produce the best outcome and that thinking musically is not just done in music class, but in their entire lives.
